Hello World!!! 2

Appendices

## Appendix A: People of Book Two

### Edward “Eddie” Bone

A mechanic who returned from his grave and carries consequences he does not fully understand. Eddie enters Dead End seeking his missing grandfather and answers about the road he followed back to life.

He discovers that Voss placed a broken portion of a lamp’s reflector into his keeping during that return. The lamp contained Lena Ward, whose voice helped Eddie continue toward the living world.

By the end of Book Two, Eddie helps restore Lena and other captives to their bodies, recovers three stranded travelers, and returns a missing stretch of road to its proper place. His unusual perceptions have not entirely disappeared.

### Elias “Eli” MacRae

Eddie’s maternal uncle. A skilled repairer with earlier experience of the crossing at Hollow Church.

Elias accompanies Eddie into Dead End, reunites with his father, and helps investigate the altered records and captive lamps. His knowledge is useful but incomplete; he continues to distinguish what he remembers from what he merely suspects.

### Eddie’s Maternal Grandfather

The father of Mara and Elias. His personal name remains unstated in this draft.

Stranded in Dead End for many years, he surrendered a passage home after Voss made him believe his children were in danger. The original agreement contains a condition that invalidates the transfer if their names were used to frighten him into signing.

When Voss’s private records establish the deception, the old man recovers his passage and returns home.

### Thomas Vale

A former Ash Springs mechanic and the keeper of North Lantern House.

Thomas offers Eddie shelter and helps investigate the road lamps. Records later reveal that he built housings around glass containing living captives. His own hidden warnings show that he recognized the abuse, tried to document it, and subsequently lost crucial memories.

He helps restore the captives and preserves the records needed to investigate those responsible.

### Mary Jane

Eddie’s friend and former coworker at Ash Springs. Her discovery and forwarding of Thomas Vale’s belongings help begin the journey into Dead End.

In the epilogue, she returns Eddie’s tools and brings letters from Mercy, where people believed dead have begun returning. She intends to travel west to help.

### Mara MacRae Bone

Eddie’s mother. Her letters remain a connection to home throughout the journey.

As a child, her name was used by Voss to deceive her father into surrendering his passage. She is reunited with him before Eddie returns.

### Harlan Bone

Eddie’s father. He remains at the family home and welcomes Eddie back at the conclusion of the journey.

### Silas Bone

Eddie’s brother. His teasing and practical concerns help preserve Eddie’s place in ordinary family life.

### Calder and Ruth Wynn

The farmers who sheltered Eddie after his return from the grave. Their care continues to shape how he responds to frightened and vulnerable people.

Eddie and Elias visit them on the journey home. The kitchen step made from Eddie’s former grave marker still holds.

### Agnes

The keeper of the house beside Hollow Church and a guardian of its crossing.

Years earlier, Agnes helped Elias return after an unsuccessful search for his father. She watches over Eddie’s horses during his time in Dead End and later regains control of both keys used at the upper crossing.

### Mrs. Rook

A surveyor who records changes in roads, distances, crossings, and the river.

Her measurements establish a connection between Eddie, the brass check, and the missing mile. Her investigation also uncovers the omitted condition in the grandfather’s agreement and preserves evidence of Voss’s conduct.

### Lena Ward

The keeper of the lower ferry’s lamps, signals, landing records, and gate.

Lena was trapped within glass and used as the living presence inside a road lamp. Part of that glass was broken and placed with Eddie during his return from death.

After being restored to her body, Lena helps recover other captives and reopen the lower crossing.

### Daniel Wren

The lower ferryman and husband of Mrs. Wren.

Daniel challenged Voss over a falsified passage record. He was later confined within a lamp, while his body remained beneath the eastern landing.

Eddie and his companions recover both. Daniel resumes his work and helps explain how Eddie can restore the missing road.

### Mrs. Wren

Daniel’s wife and an experienced caregiver.

She treats injuries, tends the rescued captives, and remains central to Daniel’s recovery. His coat, knife, and their shared memories help reconnect him with his body.

### Mr. Voss

A collector and broker of passage rights.

Voss gains control over travelers through deceptive agreements, altered records, and access to crossings. He removes Lena’s lamp from the roadside, breaks its reflector, and uses Eddie’s return as an opportunity to carry part of it into the ordinary world.

His records reveal plans to convey other captive lights by similar means. He is taken into custody for investigation; Book Two does not establish a final judgment.

### P. Senn

A maker and modifier of lamps and optical equipment.

Senn participates in the confinement and maintenance of people within glass. He supplies information that helps recover the captives after Voss restrains and abandons him.

His cooperation does not erase his responsibility.

### Hobb

The clerk encountered beneath Hollow Church, initially appearing as a man mending a boot.

Hobb later counts travelers entering Voss’s unsafe passage. He is detained and provides information about the crossing.

### Gideon Rusk

Eddie’s former foreman and murderer.

Rusk disappears from custody through an unnatural route and reaches Dead End. He remains at North Lantern House until a safe return can be arranged.

At the end of Book Two, he is returned to Harrow’s custody with supporting statements and evidence.

### Deputy Harrow

The officer pursuing the crimes associated with Ash Springs and Mercer’s death.

Harrow warns Eddie after Rusk disappears and later receives the foreman back on the ordinary side of the crossing.

### Sayer and Winn

Residents who repeatedly assist with carrying injured people, recovering captives, protecting witnesses, and restraining Voss.

Their practical help makes several rescues possible.

### Black Jack

Eddie’s horse.

Jack remains under Agnes’s care while Eddie travels through Dead End and rejoins him for the journey home.

## Appendix B: Those Recovered

### The Travelers on the Missing Road

| Person | Circumstances | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| **Joel Fenwick** | Carter stranded while transporting stove bricks | Recovered with his horse |
| **Sarah Bell** | Traveler returning from a family visit | Recovered and reunited with her sister |
| **Isaac Bell** | Sarah’s young son | First of the three brought across the boundary |
| **Ruth** | Sarah’s sister, waiting in town | Helps identify and welcome the returned travelers |

Fenwick and Sarah remember seeing Voss remove the road lamp and offer Eddie part of its contents. Their testimony provides evidence of Voss’s involvement in Eddie’s return.

### The Captive Lights

| Person | Former work | Place of captivity | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Lena Ward** | Ferry lamps, signals, records, and gate | Glass within the road lamp | Restored to her body |
| **Judith Marr** | Lodging-house keeper | Lamp held at Senn’s workshop | Recovered and restored |
| **Amos Tern** | Freight work | Lamp held at Senn’s workshop | Recovered and restored |
| **Daniel Wren** | Ferryman | Lamp modified for use at the upper crossing | Recovered and restored |

The captives’ bodies were kept alive separately. Restoring them required locating those bodies, opening the housings carefully, and helping each person recognize a place to return within themselves.

## Appendix C: Places

### North Lantern House

Thomas Vale’s boardinghouse in Dead End.

It becomes Eddie’s refuge, a meeting place for investigators, and a temporary place of care for rescued travelers and lamp captives. Its guest ledger records Eddie’s reception and Thomas’s refusal to grant Voss a room.

### Hollow Church

A ruined church on the ordinary side of a crossing.

The narrow door beside its platform opens onto a passage larger than the building should contain. The church’s empty bell tower and the ropes found along the route are associated with the crossing’s disturbance.

### Agnes’s House and Stable

The occupied house beyond Hollow Church.

Agnes provides food, directions, and a watched point of return. Eddie leaves Jack there before entering Dead End.

### The Room Beneath the Arch

A chamber along the upper crossing where Hobb first appears to be mending a boot.

It later becomes the counting point for people being directed through Voss’s unsafe passage.

### Dead End

A town reached by roads that do not consistently obey ordinary distance or geography.

People live, work, trade, keep records, and search for missing relatives there. Buildings, streets, and routes may change. Time in Dead End cannot be assumed to match time outside it.

### The River

The dark river passing through Dead End.

It reflects neither lamps nor sky in the usual way. It is associated with crossings, altered roads, and the connection carried by Eddie’s brass check.

### The Lower Ferry

The crossing worked by Daniel Wren and maintained with Lena Ward.

Its service was interrupted and its access controlled by Voss. Restoring the gate and records allows legitimate crossings to resume.

### The Eastern Stairs

The approach to the lower landing, its records rooms, and the spaces beneath the embankment.

Lena once lived above these stairs. Her body and Daniel’s were kept in separate rooms below.

### Mrs. Rook’s Office

The survey office housing measurements, route histories, reports, and copies of passage agreements.

Its records help distinguish observed changes from rumor and establish what Voss omitted from the documents he supplied.

### Thomas’s Former Workshop

The green-door shop where Thomas repaired and constructed lamp housings.

A hidden statement and a warning scratched inside the door preserve evidence that he recognized Lena’s captivity and tried to resist it.

### Senn’s Workshop

A concealed workshop reached by stairs behind Thomas’s old premises.

It contains polishing
