A Record of Mercy
*The following notes collect the people, places, evidence, and unresolved questions of Book Three. They contain spoilers through the epilogue.*
### I. The People Who Returned
Ten people reached Mercy through the disturbed passage. Their receiving checks identified arrivals; those numbers were separate from the quarry’s original labor checks.
| Receiving check | Person | Position at the end of Book Three |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | A freighter, a woman who died of fever, and an older man | The first three sheltered by Clara. Their individual check numbers are not established in the narrative. All remain after their conveyances end. |
| 4–6 | Nathan Pell, Esther Bell, and Benjamin Bell | Arrive together at Clara’s stable. Their individual numbers are not established. Nathan later accepts work at the freight store. |
| 7 | Lucy Vale | Reunited with her parents. Begins lessons with children in Mercy. |
| 8 | Anna Vale | Returns at the family’s former quarry house. Begins corresponding with her granddaughter. |
| 9 | Jonah Reed | Reunited with his sister, Rebecca Warren, and leaves Mercy with her and her husband. |
| 10 | Samuel Vale | Reunited with Anna and Lucy. Recovers gradually and gives evidence about the quarry account. |
**Martin Rell’s entry:** The account begins counting Rell as eleven after his guarantee to Cress is invoked. He is already present and alive; his entry is not another resurrection.
**Unused checks:** Twelve and thirteen are recovered from Rell. His spare receiving check numbered twelve must not be confused with Jonah’s older quarry labor check.
### II. Principal People
**Eddie Bone**
Returns from Dead End before the events of this book. Clara asks for his help when the dead begin arriving in Mercy. His burial paperwork is used to place his name in a mechanism and a substituted receiving account without his agreement.
**Mary Jane**
Eddie’s traveling companion and a skilled mechanic. Examines the bell fitting, preserves evidence, separates observations from claims, and helps end the receiving arrangements. Later considers work at a repair yard south of Mercy.
**Clara Mercer**
Keeper of Mercy’s boardinghouse. Initially shelters the returned in her stable, then moves them into the house. Her account book records meals, rooms, names, and care without accepting ownership of her guests or their alleged debts.
**Marshal Hollis**
Mercy’s marshal. Preserves statements, arrests suspects, recovers property, and pursues charges supported by witnesses and physical evidence. He records uncertainty rather than treating unexplained events as settled facts.
**Baird**
Assists Hollis with guards, searches, evidence, and custody.
**Orrin Shaw**
Keeper of the quarry’s receiving register. Installs and repeatedly uses the fitting supplied by Rell. Continues after learning that people other than Eddie are answering the call. Later gives a statement admitting his actions.
**Martin Rell**
Agent who acquires the old quarry account and attempts to transfer its outstanding obligations to Eddie. Uses concealed terms, paid carriers, receiving checks, and misleading paperwork. His own guarantee exposes him when the plan fails.
**Elias Cress**
The quarry authority who authorizes twelve laborers below, then orders the official total reduced to eleven. Retains wages and personal effects. Later seeks discharge through a substitute account holder. His whereabouts remain unresolved after the quarry office becomes ordinary again.
**Martha Venn**
A wagoner buried shortly before the original collapse. Returns to deliver the dead and their effects. Preserves claims against the sender rather than accepting the company’s debts. Keeps Cress’s original authorization and completes her final delivery during Eddie’s investigation.
**Ada Venn**
Martha’s granddaughter. Maintains the family yard and preserves the wagon and records left by her father, Thomas Venn.
**Rebecca Warren**
Jonah’s older sister. Her letter and travel money were withheld at the quarry. She spent years seeking him after being falsely told he had left. Reunites with him in Mercy.
**Daniel Warren**
Rebecca’s husband. Welcomes Jonah and supports his choice to visit their home without treating that decision as permanent or compulsory.
**Doran**
A grieving father whose son, Matthew, does not return. Helps Clara’s household despite his own loss. With Eddie’s help, finishes the wooden horse he had begun for his son.
### III. The Vale Family
Samuel and Anna lived at the quarry with Lucy. Their older son, Will, had left for work.
Samuel kept the stores and accounts. After the collapse, he preserved evidence that Jonah had been authorized to work below and had been omitted from the official total. He hid copies inside a repaired table leg.
Lucy and Anna died after an illness two winters after the collapse. Samuel’s later death is not established in this book.
After the family’s return:
- Lucy recognizes Anna despite having begun to lose memories of her.
- Samuel returns bearing injuries associated with the earlier quarry disaster.
- An inquiry establishes that **William Samuel Vale** married, had two children, and died eleven years before the inquiry.
- Will’s daughter **Ellen** begins corresponding with Anna and Samuel.
**Name distinction:** No family relationship is established between these Vales and **Thomas Vale**, keeper of North Lantern House.
### IV. Places
**Mercy**
The frontier town where the returned gather. The red moon is visible within a bounded area around it.
**Clara’s Boardinghouse**
Shelter, sickroom, meeting place, and the destination named in Rell’s delivery scheme. Its hospitality becomes something he tries to use as evidence of consent.
**Blood Gorge and the Old Quarry**
Site of the abandoned workings, camp, bell, office, and the Vale house. The old powder-house track remains the safer approach when the shorter road is broken—or suspiciously restored.
**The Blue-Doored House**
The Vales’ former home. Lucy wakes there. Anna later appears beside its stove. Samuel’s hidden papers survive inside the table leg.
**The Quarry Office**
Contains Cress’s old account and retained property. During the confrontation, it opens onto scenes and spaces beyond the ordinary building. Afterward, investigators find an abandoned office.
**The Lime Shed**
Rell’s temporary delivery station. Briefly opens into Cress’s office.
**Venn’s Yard**
Ada’s home and harness workshop. Martha’s wagon preserves delivery records and the authorization for twelve laborers.
**North Lantern House**
Thomas Vale’s lodging house in Dead End. Returns to prominence in the epilogue when paperwork names it as a forwarding address and a message appears beneath Room Six.
### V. The Evidence
| Item | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Cress’s original authorization | Twelve laborers were authorized for the lower gallery. |
| Samuel’s hidden copies | Jonah was entered, removed from the official total, and deliberately preserved in Samuel’s private record. |
| Jonah’s quarry check, No. 12 | Supports his authorized presence at the workings. |
| Jonah’s intercepted letter | His sister offered him a home and travel money that he never received. |
| Martha’s delivery sheets | Delivery of remains and effects did not surrender the families’ claims against the sender. |
| The box marked **UNDELIVERED** | Personal effects remained in Cress’s possession. |
| Cress’s cashbook | Records money transferred from quarry payroll into his private balance. |
| The bell fitting and name strip | Eddie’s burial information was used to direct a call toward him. |
| Rell’s receipts and register case | Show attempts to substitute Eddie as receiver through concealed terms and intermediaries. |
| The notice inside the pine box | Establishes an attempt to convey Eddie to the quarry under a false claim that he was confused and resistant. |
| Clara’s account book | Provides an independent record of actual arrivals, care, and lodging. |
| Hollis’s statements and inventories | Preserve testimony, disputed claims, recovered property, and corrections in an ordinary public record. |
### VI. What the Events Establish
These are observed features of the Mercy incident, not universal laws governing every passage through the Blackened Veil.
**A name can direct a call.**
The fitting uses Eddie’s name and burial information. Its operation brings other people through when he does not answer as intended.
**Objects can remain attached to a passage.**
Receiving checks accompany the arrivals and later produce marks on their bodies as the opening closes.
**Memory can help someone find another person.**
Anna hears Lucy and Eddie discussing the family home before returning there. The exact mechanism remains uncertain.
**Arrival does not grant ownership.**
Rell and Cress attempt to make shelter, transport, and aid serve as evidence of acceptance. Those claims are challenged through testimony and the actual terms of the records.
**Completing conveyance differs from accepting debt.**
Martha’s documents preserve that distinction. It becomes essential when the ten arrivals return their checks and acknowledge that they have reached Mercy.
**Choice matters, but its limits remain unknown.**
Jonah chooses to remain. The eleven men leave through the opened road. The book does not establish that every returned person, in every circumstance, receives the same choice.
**Correcting a record does not repair every loss.**
The original obligation remains with Cress. Families recover evidence and belongings, but lost years, withheld wages, grief, and legal accountability still require attention.
### VII. Order of Events
1. A red moon remains stationary above the Mercy region.
2. Clara shelters the first returned people, then admits Nathan, Esther, and Benjamin.

17. Jonah reunites with Rebecca. Families reclaim property, and the schoolroom receives a corrected memorial record.
18. Returned paperwork exposes a separate inquiry made after Eddie’s death.
### VIII. Unfinished Matters
At the close of Book Three:
- The ten returned people have remained after the Mercy passage closes.
- The book does not establish their long-term mortality or whether their experiences will have further effects.
- Rell and Shaw face proceedings; final judgments are not given.
- Cress remains associated with the unpaid original balance, but his location and ultimate fate are unknown.
- Recovered property and funds are being traced to families and heirs.
- Anna and Samuel are corresponding with Ellen.
- Jonah has left with Rebecca and Daniel.
- The identity of the person who supplied Eddie’s burial information remains unknown.
The epilogue adds further questions:
**Elias’s inquiry**
After Eddie’s death, Elias sent an inquiry seeking him. Mara knew he was asking. Elias says he received no reply before Eddie’s return became known.
**Celia Marr**
The woman Elias entrusted with the inquiry. Her present whereabouts and role beyond carrying it are unknown.
**The Office of Absent Persons**
Appears on returned paperwork using North Lantern House as an address. Elias explains that some addresses in Dead End serve as holding or forwarding instructions rather than ordinary premises.
**The demand for personal appearance**
A concealed routing instruction requires verification of Eddie’s present holder and, if he is living, his appearance in person.
**Room Six**
Thomas receives a message stating that the first carrier failed and instructing him to keep the room. Something then moves inside the locked room Eddie once occupied.
### IX. Closing Record
The schoolroom in Mercy bears twelve names.
The receiving papers no longer hold Eddie as their account owner.
The people who remained are finding work, writing letters, meeting family, and deciding where to live.
Those facts are established.
Who first sought to turn Eddie’s return into someone else’s obligation remains to be answered.
